178. HERBERT LOMAS husband of Elizabeth Ann Pennington (179) son of Richard Lomas (1034) & Mary Palmer (1035)

-8 Hadfield St, Broughton, Salford 1901 (census)
-18 City Road, Hulme, Manchester (c1903 onwards) is probably a place of work rather than a residence.
-24 Greenhill Road, Cheetham Hill, Machester 1911 (census)

* The location of 'Folby House' is unknown, however, see 1861 census below.
Slater's Manchester, Salford and Suburban Directory 1903 (Trades & Official Directory). 'page 1424; Coach & Carriage Builders, Lomas, Herbert, 18 City Rd, H (Hulme). p1670, Wheelwrights, Lomas, Herbert (same address as above)'.
Slater's 1909 & 1911 Directories-(this entry refers to 1911 Alphabetical Directory). 'page 1321; Lomas, Herbert; Coachbuilder; 18 City Rd, H (Hulme); res. 24 Greenhill Rd, C H (Cheetham Hill)'. 1911, also in Street directory Herbert described as Wheelwright whilst resident at Greenhill Rd.
    also: Lomas, Herbert Harold; Wheelwright; 28 Emerson St, C (Cheetham).
There is some evidence to suggest the company began in 1862 and began to flourish around 1910-20, being incorporated as a private limited company on 6th December 1913.
[Kelly's Directory of Leicester & Rutland 1895 reveals, on page 470, Cycle Makers; Lomas, Herbert C; see Wait & Lomas. (Wait & Lomas; 291/2 & 56 Gladstone St, Leicester. This is only included as the occupation is related to the above occupations. Quite often manufacturers of cycles expanded their businesses into the motor trade at the turn of the 19th & 20th centuries). This link, however, is extremely tenuous in this instance.]

Therefore, to date, the timeline would be as follows;
occ.     1891 Wheelwright (census)
           1901 Wheelwright of Salford
           1903 Coach & carriage builder of 18 City Road, Hulme, Manchester.
           1909 Coachbuilder & Wheelwright, City Rd.
           1911 Coachbuilder & Wheelwright, City Rd.
           1911 Wheelwright (census)

Herbert Harold (43) is listed in the census returns of 1891 as being son of Herbert (178).
The 1881 census listing below is included as the occupation & location given is similar to the above. The age of Herbert, 23, gives a birth date of c1858 (a Herbert Lomas was b. Sept 1857, Leek district 6b 216 (FreeBMD). Census taken at 9 Church Place, Salford;

Herbert LOMAS   Head   M   Male   23   Stafford, England   Wheelwright
