Extract from the 'Rotherham Advertiser' 29 September 1928;
'THE LATE MR. JOSEPH JACKSON OF
MASBRO'. -The interment took place in the Masbro' Cemetery, on Saturday, of Mr.
Joseph Jackson, of 20 Rosebery Street, whose death, at the age of 65 years, was
reported in our last issue. Prior to the last sad rites taking place, a service
was held in the Masbro' St John's Church, where deceased had been a chorister
for more than 15 years. As the funeral cortege proceeded to the church, the
choir, fully surpliced, lined up n the church-yard, and later preceded the
funeral bearers to the cemetery. In the church the deceased's favourite hymn,
"Onward Christian Soldiers" was sung by the choir, and at the graveside a hymn,
"Son of My Soul" was sung. The Vicar (the Rev. S. Snell), who conducted an
impressive service, spoke in appreciative terms of the deceased's devotion to
the church, and offered his and the church's sympathy with the mourners. Mr. W.
S. Hampshire presided at the organ. The mourners included Mrs Jackson (widow),
Mr. Edward Jackson (son) and Miss Lilian Jackson (daughter). The bearers were
deceased's fellow workmen from Messrs. Steel, Peach and Tozer's Works. Many
representatives of the Masbro' St. John's church were present. There were many
beautiful floral tokens, including those from the family, the Vicar and choir of
St. John's church, Mrs. Sotheran, Mrs. Goucher, "Connie and Irene Muscroft",
"Margaret (?) Purser", etc. Messrs. O. Bywater and Co. were the undertakers.'
The name 'Purser' is unclear in the
original and may be incorrect.
