References to all individuals of all families will eventually appear on these Trehearn pages with brief details of selected families which will have their own page. Names are not in any particular order. Extant individuals are not identified unless permission was given. Reference numbers with a letter prefix refer to my early written notes. occ. Boot/Shoe shop manager of 'England's Smart Shoes' (proprietor-Charles England) 1915 to 16 April 1964 serving 49 years. Firstly at 4 Tib Street, Picadilly, Manchester then at Pinstone Street and High Street, Sheffield until retirement. There were also branches in Birmingham and, possibly, Liverpool. Shortly after 1964, Englands were taken over by Lennard's Shoes. They are no longer extant in Sheffield or Manchester.

d. 2 November 1976 at 39 Bannerdale Road, Millhouses of Coronary Thrombosis. Suffered head injury due to a fall a day or two previously.
crem. at Hutcliffe Wood Cemetery, Millhouses.

In 1916, George joined the Prince of Wales Volunteers as a Private then the 3rd South Lancashire Regiment and probably transferred to the 6th South Lancashires (as the 3rd never left the UK) and served in Mesopotamia during the Great War and was at Allenby's HQ at Basra. The aim of the Mesopotamian front was to secure British oil supplies and to dislodge the Ottoman Empire of the Turks who were allies of the Germans. See www.1914-1918.net for more information on this campaign.
Private 36592 (acting Sergeant) is listed in the National Archives' Medal Card as being in the date range of 1914-20 (Catalogue Ref. WO372/20. Image Ref. 76497/12416). He is believed to have become a non-commissioned warrant officer, but I await evidence to support this. His Great War Victory Medal is inscribed 'Sergeant'.
It is noted that from a photograph of George Ellis in uniform, that one of the medal ribbons worn is similar to the ribbon of the Military Cross whose description would be; a purple centre strip with white on either side. The photograph is black & white and may refer to another award. I can, however, find no other award which relates to a dark centre stripe with white either side. There is, also, no evidence to suggest the Military Cross was ever awarded to George. The question of the ribbon, therefore, remains open.

Not found on 1911 census (Jan 2013)

d. & crem. 2nd quarter 1997, Manchester

As mentioned above, George Kenneth left home somewhat abruptly in the mid to late 1930s. None of my relatives volunteered the fact that he existed at all until my sister mentioned that she heard my grandmother (Ellen Kirby) saying her prayers one evening in which 'Kenneth' was mentioned (George Kenneth was simply known as Kenneth to the family apparently). A discussion with my father confirmed his brother had left home and was not heard of since then.
An exhaustive search for George Kenneth amongst various records and directories proved fruitless. He does not appear in Kelly's Directories of 1934, 35, 37, 38 or any since then.
Whilst working at 'Englands' in Manchester, a letter addressed to (4) was delivered postage unpaid. Refusing to pay postage on letters from 'boyfriends', George Ellis returned the letter to the postman. Thinking the letter could be a response by Kenneth to an earlier letter from (4) asking him to get in touch, an enquiry was made at the post office, but the letter had been destroyed. (4) thought that he had been sleeping rough at the 'black and white house' (a chalet type holiday dwelling) as it had been broken in to. It was here she had left her letter.
After searching for about 2 years the reasons for failure appeared to be limited so a new approach regarding name change was undertaken and a number of names were considered; William, Gordon, Norman, Kirby, Ellis, to name a few, both as forenames and surnames. Eventually, a Norman Ellis (Norman the name of a brother & Ellis, father's second forename) was found living at Victoria Square, Manchester from about 1981. (4) made contact and found brother 'Kenneth' in 1989 after 50 years 'lost'.

A number of Norman Ellis' were marr. in Manchester (the most likely place);

res. 1639?-1683
d. 1683 'Wilcroft', Lugwardine

A John Tryhearne marr. Elizabeth Parker 14 June 1636 at Pencombe, Hereford (IGI)
It is possible that Mary (58) was not his mother as he is described as Richard's eldest son (brother William b.1611 - Mary m. after 1624). There is, therefore, controversy as to John's date of birth-was he born before 1611 or, as 'familysearch.org' suggests, about 1645 (unlikely).

In his will of 30 August 1637, John's father, Richard (38), left all his property to his wife Mary (58) instructing her to pass on the "heirlooms and standards" to John (the eldest son). On Mary's death in 1639, she passed on the "heirlooms" and also her "best turned chairs".
Before the marriage of Beatridge (John's daughter by his 1st wife Elizabeth) in 1665 to John Holland of Lugwardine, an indenture was entered into concerning a tenement in Lugwardine previously held by James Hodges, which was given to John Holland by Beatridge's father, John, and his wife Elizabeth, in lieu of marriage portion, the premises being of the yearly value of 53 shillings and fourpence.
At the time of John's death in 1683, there was 4 acres of corn on land at 'Wilcroft' and more at Froome Pryors (now Priors Frome, near Mordiford).

m1. 1601 Elinor (60)**
children: Joan (1807)*
m2. Joan*** Traherne (61) 1606-1624, probably his cousin (daughter of his uncle William Traherne)
m3. Mary (58), the mother of his children.
children: John (37), William (271), Ann (272), Richard (273), Jane (276), Elinor (275), Mary (274)
A John s/o Richard (no mother listed), bp. 22 May 1604 St Nicholas, Hereford.

res. 'Wilcroft', Lugwardine which, at that time, was a manor house standing in upwards of 4 acres of land and was approached by a long drive with it's own lodge at the drive entrance. The lodge still remains standing on the main Hereford to Ledbury road, but the drive and most of the land is now developed as a site of modern houses (this in 1986). The present 19th century house of 'Wilcroft' is approached from a side road.
occ. Yeoman.
d. 1637 Lugwardine.

The dates of Richard's marriages do not add up. His children appear to have been born before his marriage to their mother Mary or before the death of his 2nd wife Joan.

In his will of the 30 August 1637, he left all his property to his wife Mary (58) instructing her to pass on the "heirlooms and standards" to their eldest son John (37) and he also left his "1st best, 2nd best, 3rd best and 4th best" goods to be divided amongst his children. To the parish church of Lugwardine he gave "one new bell rope" and to the poor of the parish 3 shillings and fourpence. He was owed 20 shillings by Francis Howell of Castleton, Ocle Pichard, "for the remnant of 5 pounds lent and delivered" one year past.
Richard paid rent for a "pleck of pasture" at 'Wilcroft', and it would seem he farmed this land. He was a literate man as he was capable of signing his name in full even when a sick man making his will, an uncommon occurrence at that time. Where most would sign using an 'X', the Trahernes often used a 'T'. It is possibly his literacy involved him in work other than farming as it is known he attended Mr Thomas Bowcett, of the town of Brecknock, in his Sheriff work.
